Industry website GamesIndustry.biz reports that a Sony spokesperson has told IDG of potential compatibility issues effecting the Playstation 3. Sony has previously stated that the PS3 will play older PS2 and PSone titles, however the company are not guaranteeing 100% compatibility, especially after it was revealed that some games don't work properly on the latest edition of the PS2. "It's hard to say the PlayStation 3 will be 100 per cent backwards compatible," Reiko Sakamoto commented. "But as we said earlier this year, we aim to make it so as much as possible."
The topic was raised by chatter surrounding the issues currently effecting the new silver PS2, an updated chipset for which causes problems for certain titles, depending on how they were designed. A total of 38 PSone games and 9 PS2 titles fall victim to the problem. Indeed, with testing still progressing on older games it is still possible more games will be added to the list. Hopefully this news will prompt Sony to examine the PS3's compatibility more closely, and stave off any pitfalls there.
Additionally, it is still unclear the degree to which the next-generation Xbox 360 will support original Xbox games - beyond the biggies like Halo. A list of supported games is expected from Redmond soon.
